about

I always slept with the radio on.
Inevitably the BBC World Service was my choice as an ex-pat who just wanted to hear his own language at an hour when my country of birth seemed impossibly far away. However the drawback was the amount of repetition, the same stories repeating over and over, the same voices. The clock ticked ,the hands moved forward but the World couldn't keep up.
Came the moment when I dared to switch the bloody radio OFF…..but it wouldn't be silent.I pulled the plug but the same scenarios replayed. The same voices over and over.
I crawled out of bed to look at the first trams rattling past the window.Suddenly there was an explosion of some kind, maybe close to the police station.
I didn't bother with shoes or a coat , I ran down the stairs and foolishly closed the front door behind me. Just plain curiosity- when I was satisfied I'd crawl back into my bed and switch the radio back on.
I walked through the people. So early yet the pavement was packed.
Then I saw that old warehouse with a rusting sign over the door that said "Laughing Gas".
I couldn't figure out why I had never noticed that before.Suddenly I felt very uncomfortable. Suddenly I felt cold and wanted that coat, that pair of shoes…..
I shuffled my way back through the crowd ,past the convenience store, the little cafe but I couldn't find my own doorway.
Further further ,I was almost at the station and knew I had to turn around and again I walked and walked feeling colder and colder. I COULD NOT FIND THE DOORWAY.EK
